Trường đại học Abertay được nhiều người biết đến về lĩnh vực trò chơi điện tử và thiết kế mỹ thuật. Đây là trường đại học duy nhất của Vương quốc Anh được công nhận chính thức trong cả hai lĩnh vực này và là cũng đối tác với Đại học Bắc Kinh ở Trung Quốc về mảng trò chơi điện tử. Trường cũng mạnh về mảng đào tạo học thuật các lĩnh vực Công nghệ thông tin, Kinh doanh, Kinh tế và Công nghệ sinh học.
Đại học Abertay có trụ sở tại Dundee, miền đông Scotland với hơn 4.500 sinh viên đang theo học. Trường có nhiều khóa học và tòa nhà hiện đại, sử dụng công nghệ cao trong phương thức học tại cả năm cơ sở của trường và một học viện với chức năng là các phòng ban và khoa của trường. Trường cũng có nhiều phòng ban chuyên môn trong các lĩnh vực như công nghệ gỗ, hệ thống nước đô thị và tin-sinh học. Đại học Abertay có được nhiều mối quan hệ chặt chẽ trong ngành công nghiệp với các công ty như Sony, Microsoft, Rare và Codemasters.

Đại học Abertay là trường đại học đầu tiên ở Vương quốc Anh cấp bằng cho ngành Trò chơi điện tử cũng như là trường đầu tiên cung cấp môn hack hợp pháp. Abertay được xem là tiêu chuẩn vàng cho việc cung cấp An ninh mạng. Trường cũng có 39 bằng cấp quốc tế gồm các chuyên ngành như Khoa học y sinh, Khoa học pháp y, Khoa học thực phẩm, Luật, Thể thao, Tâm lý và Kế toán cùng nhiều bằng cấp được xếp hạng cao ở Vương quốc Anh về chất lượng, học thuật, giảng dạy, đánh giá và sự hài lòng của sinh viên.
