Extending a Visa and Extending a Study Permit
Tuesday - 02/12/2025
International students often forget or overlook the need to extend their visa and study permit. This is extremely important and can directly affect your ability to continue your studies in Canada.
- When do you need to extend your Visa? If a student plans to travel back to Vietnam for a visit, they must check whether their Visa (Temporary Resident Visa – TRV) is still valid at the time they intend to return to Canada. If the visa has expired or will expire soon, the student must apply for a visa extension to ensure they have a valid travel document to re-enter Canada for their studies.
- When do you need to extend your Study Permit? As a student approaches the end of their academic year, their school will issue a new Letter of Acceptance based on the student’s academic progress. This new letter is required for the student to extend their Study Permit, which allows them to legally remain in Canada to continue their studies. Generally, when a Study Permit has about four months left before it expires, the student should begin preparing their application for renewal.
