France, officially known as the French Republic, is a country whose main territory is located in Western Europe, along with several overseas regions and territories. Metropolitan France stretches from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine River to the Atlantic Ocean.
France also includes French Guiana in South America and several islands in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. The country consists of 18 regions with a total area of 643,801 km² and a population of more than 67 million as of October 2018. France is a unitary semi-presidential republic, with Paris serving as its capital, largest city, and primary cultural and commercial center. Other major urban centers include Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Nice, Toulouse, and Bordeaux.
