Germany, officially known as the Federal Republic of Germany, is a federal parliamentary republic located in CentralWestern Europe. The federation comprises 16 states, covers an area of 357,021 km², and has a largely temperate seasonal climate. With a population of approximately 83 million, Germany is the most populous member state of the European Union. It is also the second-largest destination for immigrants worldwide, after the United States (2014 data). The capital and largest metropolitan area is Berlin, while other major cities include Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Düsseldorf.

In the 21st century, Germany is recognized as a global power with the world’s fourth-largest economy by nominal GDP and fifth-largest by purchasing power parity. Germany leads globally in several industrial and technological sectors and ranks as the world’s third-largest exporter and importer (2015). The country maintains a high standard of living supported by a skilled and productive workforce, a comprehensive social security system, universal healthcare, strong environmental protection policies, and tuition-free higher education.

Germany is a founding member of the European Union (1993), part of the Schengen Area, and a co-founder of the Eurozone (1999). It is also a member of the United Nations, NATO, the G8, G20, and the OECD. Germany has the world’s ninth-largest military expenditure. Culturally, Germany has a rich heritage and has produced many influential figures in the arts, philosophy, music, sports, science, engineering, and innovation.
