Malaysian Secondary Schools: Overview of Primary and Secondary Education in Malaysia

Many parents and students today are interested in Malaysia’s education system as a high-quality and diverse international study option. With a clear structure, a multicultural environment, and various types of schools, Malaysia provides suitable learning pathways for students at both the primary and secondary levels. The article below offers an overview of school stages, programs, and common educational options available in the country.

Overview of the Malaysian Education System

The Malaysian education system is divided by age groups and grade levels as follows:

  • Nursery: 3–4 years old
  • Kindergarten: 4–6 years old
  • Primary School (Standard 1–6): 7–12 years old
  • Secondary School (Form 1–5): 13–17 years old
  • Pre-university (Form 6 / Matriculation): 18–19 years old

At the primary and secondary levels, Malaysia offers various types of schools to meet different learning and language needs, including:

  • Public schools (Malay-medium, Chinese-medium, Tamil-medium)
  • Private schools (following the national curriculum COPS/NCOSS)
  • International schools (Canadian, British, American curriculum, etc.)

Primary Education in Malaysia

Primary education begins at age seven and lasts for six years. Students may choose from different types of schools based on the language of instruction, including Malay-medium, Chinese-medium, Tamil-medium public schools, as well as private and international schools that use English as the main language.

Regardless of school type, Malay and English are compulsory subjects. Public primary schools do not charge tuition fees, while private and international schools operate on a fee-paying basis.

At the end of primary school, students take national assessments depending on the curriculum used by their school.

Lower and Upper Secondary Education

Secondary education lasts for five years, from Form 1 to Form 5, and is divided into two stages:

  • Form 1–3: Lower Secondary
  • Form 4–5: Upper Secondary

In public schools, Malay is the main language of instruction, while English remains a compulsory subject. Students also study mathematics, science, humanities, Islamic or moral education, and specialized subjects depending on their chosen stream in upper secondary.

At the end of Form 5, students take the SPM examination – the Malaysian Certificate of Education – which is equivalent to the UK GCSE (previously known as the O-Level). SPM results play a key role in determining pathways into pre-university or higher education.

Pre-University: Form 6 and Matriculation

After completing SPM, students can choose between two pre-university pathways:

  1. Form 6 – STPM (Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia)
  • STPM is widely recognized as equivalent to the British A-Level qualification.
  • Duration: 1.5 – 2 years
  • University opportunities: Accepted by universities in Malaysia and many other countries.
  1. Matriculation (Pre-University Programme)
  • Matriculation is a pre-university program designed to prepare students for higher education.
  • Duration: 1–2 years depending on the program track
  • Institutions: Offered by public matriculation colleges and various private institutions.

The following are the categories of primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary schools in Malaysia, which will be linked accordingly:
