WHY STUDY IN ITALY?

Tuesday - 16/12/2025

Italy’s education system is considered one of the world’s most advanced and historically rich. With modern, internationally oriented academic programs across diverse strengths, combined with its deep cultural heritage and high quality of life, Italy has become one of the most attractive study-abroad destinations in Europe for international students.

Reasons to choose Italy for your studies:

1. World-class education & professional academic training:

Italy is one of the four founding countries of the European Higher Education Area (Sorbonne Declaration, 1998), forming a crucial foundation for university-level education reform across Europe. Several Italian universities consistently appear in the QS World University Rankings.

Two Italian universities ranked in the global Top 200 are Politecnico di Milano and Università di Bologna. Politecnico di Milano ranks 24th worldwide for Engineering and Technology. Università di Bologna is one of the oldest universities in the world and has played a significant role in shaping higher education throughout Europe.

2. Programs taught in English and Italian

Academic programs taught in English are becoming increasingly popular in Italy. Prestigious institutions such as John Cabot University, an American university based in Rome, provide English-taught courses for international students.

Several Italian universities – including Università degli Studi di Milano and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore – offer Bachelor’s and Master’s programs taught entirely or partly in English.

These international programs make Italy an ideal study destination even for students who do not speak Italian. At the same time, studying in Italy allows students to learn and practice Italian alongside English.

3. Globally recognized qualifications

Italy’s education system follows the standardized framework of the European Higher Education Area. Italian universities are among the oldest and most reputable in the world, known for their highly professional academic structures and training systems. Degrees at both the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels are internationally recognized and valued worldwide.

4. Excellent opportunities for fully funded scholarships

This is one of the key reasons international student enrollment in Italy continues to rise. The Italian government actively supports international students through full-tuition scholarships at public universities, covering both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. There are three main categories of scholarships: Government scholarships, University scholarships and Regional scholarships.

5. Lower study-abroad costs compared to many countries

Tuition fees and living expenses in Italy are generally very affordable compared to other European countries such as the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, and the Nordic nations. For example:

  • Tuition fees (Italian-taught programs): approx. 2,000 EUR/year;
  • Tuition fees (English-taught programs): 2,000–10,000 EUR/year;
  • Living expenses: 5,000–10,000 EUR/year.

This cost advantage makes Italy an attractive and financially accessible choice for many international students.

6. Freedom to choose your preferred major

Italian universities offer flexible academic structures that allow students to select elective courses based on personal interests, as long as they meet required credit loads. Popular academic disciplines include: Architecture, Design, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, Engineering and Technology, Economics, Communications, Tourism, and more.

7. Part-time work opportunities & post-graduation employment

As one of the world’s most visited countries, Italy offers abundant part-time job opportunities – especially in tourism and hospitality – for students who can communicate at least basic Italian. Additionally, all public universities in Italy collaborate with businesses to expand internship opportunities. Internships are often compulsory and count toward academic credits.

After graduation, students may stay in Italy for up to one year for job placement, with the possibility of long-term employment and residency if they meet eligibility requirements.

8. Travel across Italy and throughout Europe

Italy’s well-developed transportation system allows easy travel to major cities and cultural landmarks. With a valid residence permit, international students can freely move within the 26 Schengen countries, making Europe more accessible than ever.

9. Explore Italy’s rich cultural and historical heritage

Italy is renowned for its ancient history, legendary architecture, and vibrant traditions. Students can immerse themselves in a culturally diverse environment, interact with peers from around the world, and explore one-of-a-kind historical and artistic treasures.
