Có hai loại trường:
- Đại học khoa học ứng dụng
- Đại học nghiên cứu.
Đại học khoa học ứng dụng bao gồm các viện đào tạo tổng hợp và các viện đào tạo chuyên sau về các lĩnh vực như nông nghiệp, mỹ thuật, nghệ thuật, hoặc giáo dục. Trong khi đó, các trường đại học nghiên cứu bao gồm các trường đại học tổng hợp và các trường chuyên sâu về kỹ thuật và nông nghiệp. Các trường này đều đào tạo cử nhân, thạc sỹ & tiến sỹ.
Tại các trường Hà Lan, sinh viên có thể chọn học bằng tiếng Hà Lan với học phí được hỗ trợ, hoặc bằng tiếng Anh.
