APPLYING TO STUDY IN FINLAND

Thursday - 18/12/2025

Admission requirements for universities in Finland are not overly strict. Many institutions accept applications from students who are still in Grade 12 or have not yet received their high-school diploma. Missing documents can be submitted later.

1. Application methods

There are two application methods for applying to Finnish universities (no application fee):

  1. Joint application

With one single application form, students may apply for up to 6 degree programmes, either within one institution or across different institutions. Programmes must be listed in order of priority.

There are 3 application rounds per year:

  • English-taught programmes: January and September
    • January application round: for programmes beginning in the Autumn term (start in August-September)
    • September application round: for programmes beginning in the Spring term (start in January)
  • Finnish- or Swedish-taught programmes: March application round

Steps in the joint application process:

  1. Check available programmes for your intended intake
  2. Carefully check entry requirements for each programme
  3. Check tuition fees and scholarships
  4. Complete the application form and attach the required documents (how to fill in the form: see here)
  5. Sit the entrance examination
  6. Confirm your study place according to the university’s instructions
  1. Separate application

Each separate application corresponds to one specific programme at one university. There is no limit to the number of separate applications you may submit. Separate applications are submitted via www.studyinfo.fi/ or the university’s own website.

Application periods and procedures vary by programme; applicants must check carefully with the institution.

Steps in the separate application process:

  1. Search and review available degree programmes
  2. Select a programme and choose “Fill in application” on the university website
  3. Complete the application form as instructed
  4. Confirm your study place following the university’s instructions

2. Entry requirements

  1. Bachelor’s programmes
  • High-school graduation; a GPA of around 7.5 or higher is safest;
  • Minimum English requirement: IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80;
  • Pass the entrance examination for Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS);
  • SAT score: generally 1100+ is considered competitive (requirements vary by institution and programme; check with the university).
  1. Master’s programmes
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with a minimum GPA of 7.0;
  • Minimum English requirement: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 92;
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience;
  • Pass the entrance examination (depending on the institution).

3. Study-abroad application documents

Prepare the following documents:

  • High-school diploma;
  • High-school transcript;
  • Bachelor’s diploma and transcript (for applicants to Master’s programmes);
  • English-language certificate (IELTS/TOEFL if applying to an English-taught programme);
  • National ID card or passport;
  • Certified translations of all documents above;
  • Work-experience certificate (for Master’s applicants);
  • Entrance-exam registration form.

You may still apply even if you do not yet have your English certificate or final academic documents. Once your temporary graduation certificate, official diploma, transcript, or English-language certificate becomes available, we will help you complete the remaining steps and apply for a visa under our guidance/support.
