View the List of Universities in the UK here.

UK universities offer bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees directly on campus. They also provide a range of preparatory and pathway programs such as:

  • University Foundation
  • Diploma/International Year One
  • Pre-master’s programs

These may be delivered either by the universities themselves or through partnered educational groups.

Bachelor’s Degree Programs

Bachelor’s programs are delivered at public and private universities in the UK and have the following common characteristics:

  • Duration: For most subjects, undergraduate study lasts 3 years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 4 years in Scotland. For Medicine, Pharmacy, Law, Architecture and Engineering, programs may last 5 – 7 years.
  • Wide range of disciplines: Thousands of courses are available for students to choose from.
  • Study structure: Programs may be fully academic or may include practical/placement components lasting from 3 to 12 months, which may be paid or unpaid.

Master’s and Doctoral Programs

Master’s and doctoral degrees are collectively referred to as postgraduate programs and are generally offered in two formats:

  • Taught programs led directly by academic lecturers;
  • Research programs supervised by academic advisors.
  • Master’s programs in the UK typically last 1 year. Doctoral programs take 3 years for students who already hold a master’s degree, or 5 years for those entering with only a bachelor’s degree.

Other Programs

  • English Language Courses: duration depends on learner needs; delivered at specialist language schools or English centres within colleges and universities;
  • University Foundation Programs: for students completing Grade 11 or 12, delivered over two terms, offered by specialist pathway providers or universities;
  • Diploma/International Year One: for students completing Grade 12, taught over two terms (equivalent to first-year university study), delivered by pathway providers or universities;
  • Pre-master’s programs: six-month programmes delivered by pathway providers or universities.
