SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN CANADA

Tuesday - 02/12/2025

In Canada, there are both public and private secondary schools. At these schools, students may choose programs that combine academic subjects with English language studies, alongside standard courses such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, and other core subjects.

  • Private Secondary Schools: Canada has a large number of private secondary schools, all of which offer high-quality education. Many successful politicians and business leaders have studied at these institutions. Private secondary schools must be registered with the respective provincial or territorial Ministry of Education and must meet curriculum standards and other requirements as mandated by the Ministry. There are a wide variety of school types to choose from, including co-educational schools, boys’ schools, girls’ schools, boarding schools, and day schools; schools located in major cities, suburban areas, or small towns – allowing students to select the environment that best suits their needs.
  • Public Secondary Schools: Public secondary schools are government-funded, and many Canadian public schools now accept international students. In practice, schools wishing to enroll international students must meet additional requirements related to facilities, academic resources, and staffing. However, an increasing number of schools are eager to welcome international learners because of the cultural diversity, global perspectives, and knowledge they contribute to the school community. School Boards are responsible for managing all aspects of public schools within their district, including administration, budgeting, quality assurance, and services for international students. In addition to the standard provincial curriculum, some public secondary schools offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program – a globally recognized qualification.
