Đại học Aberystwyth thành lập năm 1872 và là trường đại học đầu tiên ở xứ Wales. Đại học Aberystwyth là trường đại học duy nhất ở Vương quốc Anh cung cấp việc làm cho tất cả sinh viên trong một năm như một phần trong chương trình học, giúp cho khả năng tuyển dụng tốt hơn mức trung bình và hiện đang có 9.500 sinh viên đang theo học.
Aberystwyth sở hữu một trong những trường đào tạo bậc sau đại học ngành quan hệ quốc tế lớn nhất trên thế giới, với hơn 150 Thạc sĩ và Tiến sĩ đang theo học. Viện Sinh học, Môi trường và Khoa học nông thôn liên kết với Đại học Bangor_ một trung tâm giáo dục và nghiên cứu chuẩn quốc tế chuyên nghiên cứu các vấn đề sử dụng đất bền vững, vấn đề biến đổi khí hậu và vấn đề an toàn thực phẩm và nguồn nước. Thư viện Quốc gia Wales là một trong năm thư viện lưu trữ sách bản quyền của Vương quốc Anh và sở hữu Trung tâm Nghệ thuật lớn nhất ở Wales.
Trường có hơn 170 Câu lạc bộ và Hiệp hội với nhiều hoạt động khác nhau ngoài việc học tập và trường còn có một Trung tâm Thể thao ngay tại khuôn viên đem đến cho sinh viên một loạt các hoạt động thể thao bổ ích. Bên cạnh đó, sinh viên còn có thể tham gia các hoạt động lướt sóng và các môn thể thao dưới nước trên bờ biển cũng như khu vực này còn được nhận giải Cờ Xanh của Liên minh Châu Âu vì sở hữu một môi trường không rác.

Về mức độ hài lòng của sinh viên thì trường Đại học Aberystwyth được đánh giá cao tại Vương quốc Anh và trong top 5 thế giới trong một cuộc khảo sát của International Student Barometer gần đây. Trường đã giành được giải thưởng Đóng góp Tiêu biểu cho Sự đổi mới và Công nghệ tại Giải thưởng Times Higher Education Awards năm 2013. 95% hoạt động nghiên cứu do Đại học Aberystwyth đệ trình cho Research Excellence Framework năm 2014 đạt hoặc vượt hơn chuẩn quốc tế.
