Giáo dục bậc đại học tại Malaysia được nhà nước hỗ trợ phần lớn về tài chính, được tổ chức dựa trên khung bằng cấp Malayssia (Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF), một khung chuẩn về bằng cấp cho các bậc cao đẳng, đại học.
Các học sinh muốn học trường đại học công lập phải học qua form 6 và thi được chứng chỉ tốt nghiệp trung học phổ thông, hoặc phải có chứng chỉ tiền đại học. Ở bậc đại học, sinh viên học để lấy bằng cử nhân, thạc sỹ, tiến sỹ.
Sinh viên có thể học tại các trường công lâp, tư thục hoặc các trường quốc tế tại Malaysia.
Các trường đại học công lâp được giảng dạy chủ yếu bằng tiếng Malai và chỉ một số chương trình được giảng dạy bằng tiếng Anh; và cấp bằng đại học của bộ đại học Malaysia.
Các trường đại học tư thục đa số là theo mô hình liên kết với các trường đại học nước ngoài về đào tạo, chương trinh, giảng viên. Sinh viên có thể chọn học toàn bộ chương trình tại Malaysia hoặc học chuyển tiếp dạng 1+2 hay 2+1.
Tại các trường quốc tế, sinh viên học chương trình của trường cụ thể đó ngay tại cơ sở của trường tại Malaysia, sinh viên có thể học toàn thời tại Malaysia hoặc có thể chuyển sang trường mẹ. Có các trường quốc tế:
