Guide for Under-18 International Students

Saturday - 29/11/2025

Studying abroad before turning 18 is an exciting opportunity, but it also comes with important welfare and guardianship requirements to ensure your safety and wellbeing. In Australia, all international students under 18 must have approved accommodation and a legally recognised guardian during their studies. This guide outlines the key requirements that you and your family should prepare before departure.

1. Accommodation Requirements

Students under 18 must stay in one of the following approved arrangements:

  • School-approved homestay
  • On-campus boarding
  • Living with an approved relative

If a relative wishes to host the student, they must provide:

  • Police Clearance Certificate
  • Working With Children Check (WWCC)
  • Required documents for all household members aged 18 and above
  • Homestay inspection conducted by the school

These procedures take at least 4 weeks, so families should prepare early.

2. Estimated costs:

  • Homestay: AUD 15,000 – 22,000 per year
  • Boarding: AUD 17,000 – 23,000 per year

3. Guardianship Requirements

All students under 18 must have a legal guardian in Australia until they turn 18.

Guardianship can be provided by:

  • The school, or
  • Licensed guardianship service providers (fees: AUD 1,500 – 2,200 per year)

If a relative wishes to become the guardian, they must:

  • Provide a Police Clearance Certificate;
  • Hold a Working With Children Check;
  • Be at least 21 years old;
  • Hold a visa valid until the student turns 18;
  • Pass the school’s interview or assessment.

These procedures also require a minimum of 4 weeks, so early preparation is essential.

Preparing accommodation and guardianship arrangements is a crucial part of studying abroad for students under 18. To avoid delays and ensure compliance with school and visa requirements, families are strongly encouraged to begin the process as early as possible.
