HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE U.S

Thứ Hai - 08/12/2025

See List of American high schools

I. General Information

The American K-12 system lasts 12 years, consisting of:

  • Elementary school – primary school, lasting 5-6 years depending on how school levels are organized in each area;
  • Middle school – junior secondary school, lasting 4-5 years depending on the district’s structure;
  • High school – senior secondary school, lasting 3 years.

The U.S. government grants educational autonomy to each state, so there is no national standardized high school curriculum. However, the quality and curriculum across states are relatively consistent, and states recognize each other’s educational outcomes.

In high school, although the curriculum, subjects, and teaching methods differ from Vietnam, the core content remains focused on fundamental scientific and social subjects: math, physics, chemistry, literature, history, geography, and science…

Elementary and middle school students study the same general subjects, while high school students, in their last two years, may take vocational certificate courses if they wish and can begin taking specialized courses based on their intended future majors.

Note that many American high schools issue diplomas to students upon completing the program, while others do not and only provide transcripts. For students attending schools that do not award high school diplomas but who need one, they may self-study and take the national exam (General Education Diploma – GED) to obtain the credential. Whether or not a student has a U.S. high school diploma does NOT affect their ability to apply to U.S. universities. However, those who intend to pursue higher education in other countries should take the GED exam to secure a diploma.

Study costs. American students are entitled to free public high school education, while international students are NOT permitted to enroll in public schools under U.S. government regulations. Both American and international students must pay tuition when studying at private schools. Tuition at schools with good to high quality ranges from 25,000-60,000 USD per year, and room and board cost around 10,000-16,000 USD per year. Boarding schools typically charge 50,000-70,000 USD per year, covering tuition, accommodation, meals, health insurance, and other services.

Scholarships. Although private high school tuition can be high, nearly all schools offer scholarships for strong or outstanding students, ranging from 10-100% of tuition. Exceptionally talented students may even receive additional scholarships for accommodation.

American cultural exchange. This is a one-year program run by educational organizations in cooperation with the U.S. Department of State, offering international students the opportunity to experience cultural exchange in American public high schools and with American host families. Students receive free tuition, housing, and meals, and must return to Vietnam after one exchange year. Students must reapply for a study visa if they wish to return for long-term studies.

II. Notes for Vietnamese students studying High school in the U.S.

In terms of study duration, both the American and Vietnamese K-12 systems consist of 12 years, and the academic year begins at roughly the same time. This makes it convenient for Vietnamese students to apply for American high school programs. Some important notes:

  1. Most U.S. schools require students to complete at least 4 semesters at the school to ensure graduation results are strong enough for entry into vocational schools or universities. Very few schools allow students to complete only 3 semesters. Therefore, the latest time to apply for U.S. high school is after finishing grade 10 in Vietnam – entering grade 11 in the U.S.;
  2. English entry requirements for high school range from 38-46 PTE A or 45-67 TOEFL / 5-5.5 IELTS, with above-average academic performance. Students without international English certificates must study at least one English-preparation term in the U.S.;
  3. All international high school students must stay either in homestay, school dormitory, or with approved relatives. Homestay fees range from 10,000-12,000-16,000 USD per year, while dormitory fees are around 16,000-20,000 USD per year;
  4. All students under 18 must have a legal guardian while studying abroad until they turn 18. This is usually arranged directly by the school, and in most cases, the school does not charge additional fees;
  5. The academic year begins in late September, and schools may accept students into their high school programs in January and September each year;
  6. The application process takes 4-6-12 weeks, and schools have application deadlines – some as early as January or February, others in March or April, for the September intake… therefore, students must submit their applications early through the Duc Anh Company;
  7. Visa processing takes 1 day; however, students must register online to book an interview appointment. Therefore, students should complete their documents early to avoid peak visa periods, which occur around July – August for the September intake and November – December for the January intake.
