The Journey to Winning a 100% Scholarship with Only One Award Available Worldwide

Some scholarships are highly competitive not only because of their value, but also because of their rarity: only one award is granted worldwide in each intake.

This year marks an extraordinary achievement as, for the third consecutive year, a student supported by Duc Anh EduConnect has been awarded the prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s International Undergraduate Scholarship– a full 100% scholarship offered by the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), a university ranked among the Top 100 globally.

The latest student to join this distinguished list is Tu Khanh Phuong, a Year 12 student from the High School for Gifted Students in Foreign Languages (ULIS- Vietnam National University, Hanoi). In July 2026, she will commence her Bachelor of Business degree at UTS.

What makes Khanh Phuong’s story particularly inspiring is not simply the phrase “100% scholarship,” but the fact that she does not see herself as someone extraordinary.

I don’t think I have any special secret to success because, to be honest, I wasn’t a particularly outstanding student at the beginning.

Her answer may surprise those who imagine scholarship recipients as students who have always excelled.

She was not:

  • A child prodigy;
  • A student with an extensive list of international awards from an early age;
  • Someone whose journey was filled only with successes.

Instead, hers is the story of a student who understood her weaknesses and worked consistently to improve them.

As Khanh Phuong shared:

I started by recognizing my limitations and identifying the goals I wanted to achieve.

From that point on, rather than trying to become someone exceptionally remarkable, she focused on making steady progress:

  • Maintaining strong academic performance at school;
  • Completing international qualifications and standardized tests;
  • Participating in extracurricular activities and challenging herself through different roles and experiences.

Through each activity, I gained a deeper understanding of myself and my core values.

Perhaps this is what made her application stand out.

Not because it contained countless achievements, but because it clearly demonstrated:

  • Who she is;
  • What she wants to achieve;
  • How she has grown through each experience.

However, a strong scholarship application is never built in a single year.

For Khanh Phuong, the journey began much earlier.

Since the early years of high school, I had already dreamed of studying in Australia. Through regular updates from Duc Anh about universities, programs, scholarships, and application deadlines, I gained a clearer understanding of my goals and was able to focus my time and effort on achieving them.

What is particularly noteworthy is that preparing early did not create pressure for her. Instead, it gave her something even more valuable:

  • Time to explore;
  • Time to make mistakes;
  • Time to grow.

As she reflected:

Every setback gave me more information about what I had not done well, what needed to change, and how I could improve. The accumulation of these small lessons over time gradually brought me closer to my goals.

Perhaps this mindset is what truly enabled her to move forward day by day.

When asked why she chose UTS, Khanh Phuong did not focus on rankings.

Instead, she spoke about the learning environment:

UTS is known for its innovative teaching methods and strong integration of digital technologies into education. I believe its programs will allow me to maximize my strengths while equipping me with the skills needed in a technology-driven world.

And perhaps the most important takeaway from Khanh Phuong’s story is this:

You do not need a perfect starting point to achieve extraordinary results.

What matters more is:

  • Whether you have the perseverance to take small steps consistently;
  • Whether you understand yourself well enough to know what you truly need;
  • Whether you have experienced mentors and advisors to guide you in the right direction.
