Đô la Úc được nhắc đến là một trong những tờ bạc có chất lượng tốt nhất và an toàn nhất Thế Giới. Nhắc đến Đô la Úc, nhiều người sẽ nghĩ ngay đến chất liệu làm nên tờ bạc này – chất liệu Polymer nổi tiếng
Đô la Úc được nước Úc giới thiệu vào ngày 14 tháng 2 năm 1966.
- Từ năm 1967, Ngân hàng Dự trữ Australia bắt đầu nghiên cứu, ứng dụng chất liệu polymer vào công nghệ in tiền.
- Năm 1988, Australia in thử nghiệm đồng tiền lưu niệm trên giấy nền polymer.
- Năm 1992, Australia chính thức phát hành đồng tiền polymer đầu tiên trên thế giới. Hơn một thập kỷ sau, tiền polymer được phát hành ở 18 nước, trong đó, Australia, New Zealand và Rumani hoàn toàn sử dụng tiền polymer thay cho tiền giấy truyền thống.
- Theo thống kê trên thế giới hiện có 23/200 quốc gia sử dụng công nghệ in tiền polymer nhưng chính xác thì hiện chỉ có 2 nước sử dụng trọn bộ tiền polymer (Úc và New Zealand) và Việt Nam là nước thứ 3 dùng phổ biến.

Công nghệ Polymer được chuyển giao cho Ngân hàng quốc gia Việt Nam để làm các loại tiền có mệnh giá như 500 ngàn, 200 ngàn, 100 ngàn, 50 ngàn, 20 ngàn và 10 ngàn VND. 6 loại tiền Polymer này được phát hành từ 17/12/2003 đến 30/08/2006.
Các mệnh giá (loại tiền) của Đô la Úc là:
- 100 AUD
- 50 AUD
- 20 AUD
- 10 AUD
- 5 AUD
Ngoài những tờ bạc Đô la Úc được làm bằng chất liệu Polymer này, thì nước Úc còn có loại tiền đồng với các loại xu có mệnh giá: 5 Cent, 10 Cent, 20 Cent, 50 Cent, 1 Đô la và 2 Đô la.
