Vocational Education and Training (VET)

Thứ Bảy - 29/11/2025

Australian VET courses are designed and taught by industry experts. They provide practical knowledge and technical skills for hundreds of trade and industry roles.

1. General Information

Vocational education in Australia is highly developed, and students with vocational qualifications can enter the workforce immediately or progress to a bachelor’s degree.
VET programs focus heavily on practical skills, hands-on training, and industry relevance, making graduates job-ready.

Because the study duration is shorter and costs are lower, many Australian students choose to complete a vocational qualification first, work to gain experience and income, and then return to university when ready. This pathway helps students save money and allows them to study while working. Many international students also choose this route.

Fields of Study: Popular vocational study areas include:

  • Business & Management
  • Community Services & Healthcare
  • Media & Information Technology
  • Design & Creative Arts
  • Engineering & Construction
  • Tourism & Hospitality
  • Real Estate Management
  • Agriculture, Aquaculture & Forestry
  • Sports, Fitness & Creative Industries

… and many more.

English Support and Student Services: Most VET institutions have English language centers on campus to help international students improve their English before or during their studies. They also provide support with:

  • Airport pickup
  • Academic assistance
  • Accommodation
  • Emotional and wellbeing support
  • Health services
  • General student services

Tuition Fees: VET tuition fees are generally affordable, ranging from AUD 12,000–20,000 per year.

Accommodation: Most vocational students are over 18 and may choose:

  • Homestay: AUD 14,000–20,000 per year
  • Shared accommodation with other students: AUD 12,000–18,000 per year (self-catering).

Pathways to University: All VET colleges offer credit transfer arrangements into university degrees. Most students can obtain a bachelor’s degree with only an additional 1.5–2 years of study after completing a diploma or advanced diploma.

Part-time Work Rights: International students may work 48 hours per fortnight during study periods, and full-time during holidays. Common jobs include hospitality, retail, factory work, tutoring, and suitable office roles. The legal minimum wage in Australia is AUD 24.95 per hour.

Vocational Qualifications and Study Duration

Qualification Level Typical Duration
● Certificate I : 3–6 months
● Certificate II & III : 6–12 months
● Certificate IV : Around 1 year
● Diploma : 1–2 years
● Advanced Diploma : 1.5–2 years
● Vocational Graduate Certificate : Around 6 months
● Bachelor’s Degree (via VET pathway) : Additional 3 years (or shorter with credit transfer)

Vocational Education and Training (VET). There are three types of vocational training providers in Australia:

  • Public institutions (TAFE)
  • Private vocational colleges
  • Vocational training offered within secondary schools

Public Institutions – TAFE (Technical and Further Education): Australia has over 60 public TAFE institutes that specialize in delivering vocational programs across the country. TAFEs focus heavily on practical skills and industry-based training, more so than universities.

Key features:

  • TAFEs are independent institutions with their own facilities, management, curriculum, and policies.
  • They may be very large, with campuses enrolling up to 50,000 students, especially in major cities.
  • Many TAFEs also offer English language programs for international students.
  • Some TAFEs operate as divisions within universities (e.g., many universities in Victoria), while others remain fully independent.
  • International students often choose TAFE as part of a pathway toward university, using credit transfer arrangements.

Private Vocational Colleges (Colleges, Institutes): Australia has approximately 5,000 private vocational colleges, ranging from small specialized institutions to large multi-campus providers.

Key features:

  • They may offer training in one field or multiple disciplines.
  • Some colleges have university pathway agreements, while others operate independently.
  • Most private VET providers offer programs in Business, IT, Hospitality, Community Services, and other popular fields.
  • Many international students choose private colleges as a flexible and cost-effective pathway into university.

Vocational Training in Secondary Schools: More than 95% of Australian high schools offer vocational training programs as part of their senior secondary curriculum. These programs help students explore career interests early. Credits earned in high school vocational courses are recognized when progressing to VET Diplomas or Certificates.

Work and Migration Opportunities in Australia

Students who graduate with a VET qualification (Diploma/Advanced Diploma) may:

  • Continue to university through credit transfer and complete a bachelor’s degree in an additional 1.5–2 years.
  • Become eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa allowing them to remain in Australia and work for 2–6 years (depending on the level of qualification completed at the university stage).
  • Apply for Skilled Migration, if they meet the required conditions and their occupation is on the eligible migration list. See list of priority occupations here.
  • Apply for employer-sponsored visas if they secure a job with an employer willing to sponsor them.
